2008-2009 EKU Academic Administrative Internship Program for Women &
Minorities
The Academic Administrative Internship Program was established to encourage
women and members of other minority groups to become involved in administration.
Through this program, faculty and/or staff members become more informed
about the responsibilities, activities, and concerns of university administrators.
In addition to stimulating interns to pursue administrative careers, this
program increases communication between administrators and faculty/staff
members. Interns develop fresh perspectives and resources that ultimately
benefit their respective departments.
Intern(s) receive one-quarter release from teaching or assigned responsibilities
for one academic year to perform duties assigned to acquaint them with
a wide range of administrative activities and responsibilities. An administrative
intern is assigned to an administrator based on the intern’s stated
preferences. An important part of the intern program is the mentoring
provided by the administrator in the area of assignment. Interns are given
the opportunity to not only shadow, but also discuss university concerns
and possible solutions with their administrative mentors. Interns have
the opportunity to attend a variety of meetings and have specific responsibilities
for working on ongoing projects and in some cases developing new projects.
At the end of the academic year, the intern is to write a brief report
describing accomplishments, commenting on insights gained, and evaluating
the intern experience.
