What's Mentoring?

Mentoring is a process whereby new people are helped into an organization or system, or backed-up regarding their own personal or professional development, by a support person. The person who does the supporting may be called a Mentor; the person being supported may be called the 'Mentee'.

Who can be a mentor?

A mentor can be a peer, faculty or staff member, or a person from the community. EPC Peer Mentors are students with at least two semesters in the program.

How are Mentors chosen?

EPC matches new student participants to Peer Mentors to help them navigate their way through college and the center. Mentors are assigned by the Academic Specialist.

What does a mentor do?

In essence, mentoring is about supporting mentees, encouraging them, helping them to keep going, and helping them to deal with obstacles or problems. Mentors may serve mentees well by doing a selection of the things listed below:

  • simply being available for a chat
  • smiling, encouraging, being optimistic about development/processes being undergone by mentees
  • helping mentees feel good about what they have already achieved
  • giving mentees informal feedback on work they do
  • helping mentees to get the most out of feedback and advice from others
  • helping mentees remember their goals when they are going through a difficult time
  • being a resource (or knowing the resources needed)

Who needs mentoring?

In the context of EPC, mentees are new participants or returning participants. All students are matched with a mentoring partner or group.

How is mentoring monitored?

All activities must be pre-approved by the Academic Specialist. A list of approved activities will be provided. Any additional activities must be approved. Activities are to be recorded by both Mentor and Mentee. Monthly meetings will be held to discuss Mentoring issues.

If you are interested in the mentoring program, please contact the Academic Specialist at 622-6684 or theresa.morris@eku.edu.
